Talk about "jumbo shrimp." Somehow I don't think I'll be sautéeing this in a little butter and putting it on my spaghetti any time soon.
The fucking thing could eat my cat. This makes my skin crawl and makes me wonder how I can stand to eat its smaller cousins.

ReplyDeleteThat is actually technically not a shrimp, per se. It's called an amphipod, and it's usually only about 2-3 cm, thank God. But it's an example of "abyssal gigantism" which is apparently something that happens to animals that develop at great depths. Apparently this is similar to "island gigantism" which happens to animals that are isolated on remote islands (Galapagos tortoise, etc.)
ReplyDeleteIt probably _would_ taste like shrimp, but it's simply too gross to contemplate. Yuck. It's even put me off regular shrimp, at least until I can get this image out of my mind.
