ChefNickChallenge #2

Seeing as how I'm disappearing to the Land O' Plenty (Calipornia) on Friday, I wanted to perhaps repeat this challenge about three years ago, just to see how far we've come along.

The challenge: to find within ten minutes' walking distance of the place you live the following ten items, in no particular order:

1. A salad spinner
2. Mirin
3. Chipotles in Adobo sauce
4. Arugula
5. 12-year-old Scotch
6. Serrano chiles
7. Sushi-grade tuna (not from a sushi shop)
8. Galangal
9. Freshly-sliced salame from a real sausage.
10. An espresso pot

I can safely say that I can get exactly six items from this list in 2009. This is better than the three I could get in 2006.

You?

  1. Though I haven't actually gone out and looked for these things, I am pretty positive I could get everything on this list save the sushi grade tuna...it is possible, but I don't know. I live really close to JTM, so I have that AND Little Italy on my side. word.

  2. JTM pretty much accounts for most on the list . . . wish I were there!

  3. We are having sashimi tuna for the first time ever tonight. It's sooo beautiful!

I'm spoiled, but for no good reason. They opened up a foodie store down the way, so I could get it all except the galangal and the espresso pot. (Unless the galangal is over in the strange produce section.)

I think you should be asking about cheese. I can't try to make your "New Canadian" Four-Cheese Pasta because I don't have "Gruyère, Emmenthal and Maréchal au lait cru" cheeses. Not so gouda.
