I’m having a really great time hassling the Manhattan denizens of the Chowhound boards. It’s great to be able to turn it around for once. On montrealfood I was being driven up the wall by people who’d write in and want me to plan their eating itineraries for their three-day stays here. I didn’t mind so much actually providing them with one, but then to not even get a reply to that email . . . it’s like being a sales dude and having someone make you explain the details on ten different models and then say thanks and walk out . . .
Anyway, I’m going to be in Manhattan with the Tiny Tornado for a couple of days in March and I wanted to know whether I should go to Peter Luger or Old Homestead (for steak) and Totonno’s for pizza . . . well, the folk over at Chowhound certainly came through.
Them New Yorkers are fiercely proud of their food . . . you can feel it in their posts. Would that we could fire up the local community likewise.
I kinda liked that one of the posters said they’d been to montrealfood.com and would be asking me for recommedations for their next trip.
We all mellow, eventually.
hey nick new york got great shanghai and korean food which you cant find in montreal!
ReplyDeleteNew York has it all!! Too bad I only have two nights to enjoy it, and only one appetite. But my choices should be good . . .
ReplyDeletechefnick.... I hate to throw a wrench into your plans...BUT.... have you concidered LOMBARDI'S for yor brick oven pizza? They are much more of an institution and the clam pie is really worth the trip. Also...don't know if you've made a final decision on STEAK...but LUGAR'S is the only way. Really and truly... so much better than Homestead is every way...except that you have to go to Brooklyn...but you should see Brooklyn anyway! Speaking of Brooklyn...and pizza.... to me...and I am a born and raised NYer..(Blooklynite originally) the best NY pizza is the slice on the street. It's unique in all the world.... (don't let's get me started on how much all pizza SUCKS here in Calgary) and by far...the best best best slice there is to be had is DiFara's on Ave. J in Brooklyn. Just jump on the Q train, (I think you may have to switch for teh local) and get off on Ave. J and go stare down the back of Dominick as he oh so slowly preforms his labor of pure love over his pies...one at a time..... I fear it might not be around much longer...you should go while you can. And another lunch you should squeeze in is Katz's Deli. I would love to hear how you compare it to Schwartz's.
ReplyDeleteI am going to Montreal next week.... for my husband's greencard interview (YIKES) and 5 days of eating... I am probably one of the pesky chowhounders you spoke of..... but I always return emails!
OK...so I just looked at your STEAK BLOG and have to add this.... When you get to Lugars....DON'T ASK FOR A MENU. Nobody gets a menu at lugars.... the surly waiters treat you even surlier (if that's a word) when you need a menu. Just sit down, when they show up and say.."you know what you want?" in an already fed tone..... say yup... steak for 2 RARE (don't get me started) side of hashbrowns, side of spinich. That's the basic requirements of the meal and it is a heavenly combo. My mouth is watering even as I write this.... If you want to start w/ the sliced tomatoes and onions and/or a shrimp cocktail you can.... but there is so much MEAT coming that it really clogs up the works..... a yummy side.....totally guilding the lilly, to quote my mother is the bacon. I think they deep fry it and slap it on a plate...but it's GOOD. The cash only thing is the sad truth.... imagine how it must feel when they finally OFFER you a Lugar's credit card. It's the only way you can get one.....
ReplyDeleteSusan,
ReplyDeleteYes,I think Lombardi's was mentioned somewhere, but I HAD to decide one way or another--plus coordinate it with people who live in California and North Carolina . . . I could have been hemming and hawing for days. But yes, it was never in doubt that it would be Peter Luger. It is the Mecca of steakdom, the King Solomon's Mines of Meat . . .
And of course, _I_ will be having mine rare, but I don't know about the other plebeians.
It will be steak for two for me and the Tiny One, but I have no idea what to do if I can't finish it. I hope they have freezers in hotel rooms.
Since I will have memorised the menu by the time we get there (both menus) there will be no need for one. I will try the bacon and the taters.
I.CAN.NOT.WAIT!!!
And it will be blogged.
Well, I've never been to Old Homestead, but the steak at Peter Luger is pretty damned amazing.
ReplyDeleteWow . . . now I am truly stoked. I'll have to not eat for three days before I go. I want to be able to DEVOUR my steak.
