A hilarious report on CFCF news names “Elio’s” as the best pizza in Montreal. Can’t remember number two, but BM pizza was number three. Don’t know about Elio’s, but BM is one of those places whose menus you find shoved in your mailbox. The kind who also make steak subs and egg rolls. Not good.
How do these people arrive at such results? Simple: the voting public. The lowest common denominator. Drag 50 people off the streets and McDonald’s will win Best Fries every time.
Well, it’s my opinion that there is no best pizza in Montreal because they’re all so mediocre, but I can assure you they’re not going to be found at Elio’s or BM pizza.
While I’m on the topic of hilarity, it’s really funny to see these huddled holdouts sitting on terrasses outside coffee shops that still have chairs outside, smoking their cigarettes. In my neighborhood, a lot of them are Arab. I wonder if they’re still going to be out there, earnestly arguing and puffing away, come January.
Nick, is it possible that "Elios" is "Amelio's" in the McGill ghetto? That place is often ranked highly (including by yours truly).
ReplyDeleteIt's true that there are not a lot of outstanding pizzas in this burgh. At least not by Italian standards.
Amelio's ranks highly (according to me) for fresh flavors and abundance in the "chicago" style. Prato on the main ranks highly in terms of decent thin-crust pizza but they have off-nights when for some reason it just doesn't work.
My research has been hampered lately, but perhaps I'll pick up the torch again soon!
Blork,
ReplyDeleteYes, it's possible that it was Amelio's, but what was written on screen was Elio's, and that's what they called it in the segment (they actually went to the restaurant.)
Prato has been about the best I've had so far, possibly because it's so unlike the typical Montreal pie. Yes, pick up the torch! There hasn't been much trustworthy research on pizzas in Montreal done that I know of. You can check out my brief article about pizza on montrealfood.com but it was originally written for the Gazette and doesn't include my usual sarcasm and petty gripes.
Actually, the number two was a family place in St Laurent called Coronet Pizzeria, , and they were also found to be number 1 by CJAD in the past. Often the best pizza comes from smaller places.
ReplyDeleteperhaps there should be different categories for Montreal style and traditional / wood oven style, they really are two different kinds of food
