I liked so many of these, I was bummed that I could only vote once. I sing in a quartet that is currently nameless... I wonder if they would go for "Slumber Rat Quartet?"
I personally LOVE Slumber Rat Quartet . . . I don't know how to change the parameters of the poll so you could choose several . . . just getting the poll up was a challenge!
But hey, I think I spent three or four years in hard considerations coming up with these names, so they're ALL my babies! Don't matter which one we choose! There are going to be four or five guys walking around (regrettably, no girls have volunteered to be drafted!) saying, "Yes, I'm in a band called Quantum Dust Devils!"
Or any one of them! (I like "MallWart!")
I just go into interminable giggles when I read these things. Just can't stop laughing. Hey, some people write books. I think up band names. So sue me! Ahh, christ, I'm going to get a hernia laughing already so I'd better sign off!
But thanks so much for voting -- if you want YOU can call yourselves Slumber Rat Quartet . . . . I think I woke up one night out of a cold sleep with that name and said "Must . . . go . . . to . . . computer . . . must write down new band name . . . ."
It's hard to decide, since I don't know what the music is like. As I wrote in a long ago blog post, I have a few pet band names that I'd like to use if I ever start a band (as if, since I can't sing and can't play any instruments). They are:
Oh Christ, Blork, you set me off . . . Mars Barf . . . I just can't stop laughing. If I could add it to the poll I would but I don't know how.
I posted to "Musicians" on Craigslist to get some opinions so I m sure we're going to have a lively debate here!
But "Mars Barf" is a classic . . . I'm just going nuts here laughing.
Trouble is, we don't know what band we're going to be . . . I think I mentioned jazz/bluespop hybrid, but that pretty much covers all the bases, unless you're Kent Nagano!
I'm dying to see how this turns out, but Mars Barf is right up there!!!!
I think any band name with the word "Quartet" in it gives it, say, like a passport-like validity.
Like If I were to name the band "The Cote-des-Neiges Orchestra," well, wouldn't you be impressed? Even if we were four fifty-somethings plunking around playing mediocre jazz?
Hey, I'd print some cool business cards and let me tell you, you'd pay $5 to come to our first concert!
The thing is, even WE don't know what music we're going to play! I mentioned "music meets performance art meets barbecue and food" but that doesn't quite wash, does it?
But you must vote nonetheless! So far the consensus is pretty much some kind of jazz-blues hybrid. Y'know, a few cover tunes, a few off-the-wall originals (:Ya done gone and left me baby" -- you know the schpiel)--

- The Tammy Whine-ettes (if it’s a country band)
- Tü Mäny Ümläüts (if it’s a heavy metal band)

But I like "Mango Czars" as well! It has a certain Latino ring to it. Maybe we should be a Cuban/Russian hybrid.
ReplyDeleteBalalaikas and trumpets! Anyone know any balalaika players?
I'll deal with the trumpet.
Ahh, fuck, I missed "Tü Mäny Ümläüts"
ReplyDeleteI swear, you're hired as official "Band Name Consultant."
I swear I'm going to get a hernia here.

Is that or is that not correct?
I need to know what style of music the band will be playing before I can vote accurately.
ReplyDeleteWhen I was in high school...getting into all sorts of crazy-ass named bands...my dad came up with his own band-name idea...
ReplyDeleteDoggie Dish Spiddle
To this day...that memory is priceless.

Great blog post, by the way.
